Housing Affordability in the 12th District

Within the Federal Reserve’s 12th District, the issue of housing affordability has emerged as a key community development challenge. The District is home to some of the highest cost housing markets in the nation, and low- and moderate-income families across the region are finding themselves among those with critical housing needs. According to the Joint Center for Housing Studies, nearly one in three households in the United States spends more than 30 percent on housing, and more than one in eight spends upwards of 50 percent.

The Association of Reinvestment Consortia for Housing (ARCH)
arch ARCH consists of the executive directors of affordable housing lending consortia formed by groups of financial institutions from throughout the country. These consortia allow financial institutions to finance affordable housing projects that they would not independently be able to fund by sharing the risks and costs associated with community development lending. Collectively, ARCH members represent over 400 commercial banks and savings and loans, with loan commitments and fundings totaling over $1.5 billion and over 45,000 affordable housing units created throughout the country. With the help of the San Francisco Fed, ARCH members gather twice a year to support one another and discuss ideas for new products.
