Mixed-income housing development strategies have been implemented in cities across the nation as a means to revitalize urban areas, deconcentrate poverty, and generate opportunity for low-income households. What have we learned thus far, and what are some implications for future policy and practice? During this event, panelists Mark Joseph, Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University's Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, and Fred Blackwell, Executive Director of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA), discussed the expectations and realities of mixed-income housing developments, and offered suggestions for enhancing outcomes for residents going forward. Dr. Joseph has conducted extensive research on mixed-income housing, focusing in particular on resident experiences at the mixed-income developments built to replace Chicago's large-scale public housing projects. Mr. Blackwell's SFRA is integrally involved in transforming San Francisco's remaining portfolio of public housing units into mixed-income developments through the city's innovative HOPE SF program. Victor Rubin, Vice President for Research at PolicyLink, moderated the discussion.
