First-Time Homebuyer Forum - COCAAN Homeownership Center

This forum showcased the Central Oregon Community Action Network's (COCAAN) new housing center and discussed the needs of first-time homebuyers as well as available downpayment assistance programs. During the meeting, the participants agreed that the housing center is a valuable asset to the community, and brainstormed ideas on how they can foster awareness of the housing center and support its operations. The participants decided to take necessary steps to accomplish the following tasks:

  • Encourage local realtors to establish links from their websites to the housing center.
  • Advertise in a variety of local publications, including Coffee News, back page of The Source.
  • Recruiting area lenders to present at first-time homebuyer classes.
  • Determine ways to reach existing renters to send them homebuyer information.
  • Consider requiring bank and Realtor partners to assist housing center in order to benefit from referrals.
  • Host a booth at Home & Garden Shows (2XYear)
  • Hold a homebuyers fair.
  • Host a booth at events held at the Deschutes County Fairground & Expo Center.
  • Encourage Chamber of Commerce to establish a link to housing center's website.
  • Seek a sponsor(s) for housing center's membership in Bend Chamber of Commerce.
  • Obtain grants to sustain operations of the housing center.

Employer-Assisted Housing Programs

This meeting highlighted Employer-Assisted Housing (EAH) -- an initiative designed to help employers achieve business goals while helping employees with their housing needs. We believe that providing homeownership assistance for new and existing staff is an effective tool to help attract and retain skilled employees, reduce turnover costs and improve workforce stability. Employer assisted housing programs can also increase employee productivity by reducing commuting times for employees that purchase homes closer to their workplace, and allow them to devote more time to their families and communities. While different efforts are available, this meeting showcased Fannie Mae's EAH initiative and financial benefits, such as a loan or grant to help with closing costs or down payment assistance. Meeting participants also learned about Seattle-area company's experiences with EAH and how employers can provide this benefit for their employees. Should you have any questions, please contact Craig Nolte at (206) 343-3761.
