Given the nation's steadfast dedication to the concept of freedom, there is little wonder that the goddess Liberty has appeared on more United States currency and in more variations than any other woman, real or mythical.

Liberty has been depicted as a fierce protector with a sword as well as a gentle creature of peace holding an olive branch. She is at times accompanied by eagles, flags, and even an altar on one banknote.
