basic shieldFrom the earliest days of the Republic, the war shield has been used as a symbol on American currency. The shield, whose 13 stripes represent the first 13 colonies, first appeared on the Great Seal of the United States in 1792 and later surfaced on the Department of the Treasury Seal approved in 1789.

The Great Seal of the United States appears on the back of our current one-dollar note. Although it's not generally known, the horizontal lines across the top of the shield are meant to represent Congress. The unattached shield lying across the eagle's breast is not an engraver's mistake; rather, it is purposely designed to express the idea that America can rely upon its own virtues without help from anyone.
