Each
state of the Union has its own seal. State seals have appeared on currency
since Colonial times, and they were particularly popular during the Free
Banking Era. Hoping to convey a proud history or special aspirations,
state seals often include some very unique iconography. |
|
The state seal of Utah includes the beehive, which comes from Mormon scripture
and symbolizes industriousness. This concept of hard work was the motive
behind the creation of Utah's nickname--the Beehive State. |
Other
states have used mythological or symbolic icons and mottos to convey their
unique history and special attributes. State seals were discontinued when
the Bureau of Engraving and Printing established standardized national
currency in 1906. |
