buffalo headThe American West has inspired some unique images on currency. For example, the buffalo, or American bison, found its way onto a 1901 U.S. note. This note quickly became nicknamed "the buffalo bill."
Chief Running AntelopeActual historical figures such as Chief Running Antelope and idealized Native Americans also were depicted by engravers as embodying virtues of a young nation, implying strength, adventure, expansion, and beauty. A design entitled "The Indian Maiden as America" appeared on Treasury notes issued in the mid-1800s.
westward expansionOther notes depicted our country's westward expansion. Some notes also illustrated scenes of the country's agrarian pursuits and the coming of the industrial revolution.
