The
American West has inspired some unique images on currency. For example,
the buffalo, or American bison, found its way onto a 1901 U.S. note. This
note quickly became nicknamed "the buffalo bill." |
Actual
historical figures such as Chief Running Antelope and idealized Native
Americans also were depicted by engravers as embodying virtues of a young
nation, implying strength, adventure, expansion, and beauty. A design
entitled "The Indian Maiden as America" appeared on Treasury notes issued
in the mid-1800s. |
Other
notes depicted our country's westward expansion. Some notes also illustrated
scenes of the country's agrarian pursuits and the coming of the industrial
revolution. |
