National Bank Notes:
Currency Backed by Government Securities
Although United States Notes were still widely accepted as a medium of exchange, most paper currency circulating between the Civil War and World War I consisted of National Bank Notes. They were issued from 1863 through 1938. National Bank Notes were partly produced by private firms under contract to the Federal government until the Federal government took over all production responsibility in 1877.
