Regional whiz kids take the Economics Challenge
TO:   Education and city-metro reporters and editors
Assignment editors
WHO:

47 of the brightest and most competitive high school students in the west vie for the regional championship in economics.

WHAT:

Media are invited to watch these young economists and future business leaders compete in the final round of the western regional Economics Challenge. In this rigorous Jeopardy-style economics competition, teams face-off in a quiz-bowl format to answer questions on micro, macro and international economics. The Economics Challenge brings all the excitement of an athletic competition to academic excellence, with pounding buzzers, split second answers, and months of training.

High school students from seven western states will compete for prize money and the chance to participate in the national finals in New York City next month. The Economics Challenge is sponsored by the National Council on Economic Education and the Goldman Sachs Foundation.

WHY:

High school curricula increasingly deal with helping students develop the real-life skills they need to succeed: to be able to think and choose responsibly as consumers, savers, investors, citizens, members of the workforce, and effective participants in a global economy. The Economics Challenge showcases the talents and efforts of students and their teachers, and provides an opportunity to honor high achieving students.
