Genentech Executive Joins Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco Economic Advisory Council

San Francisco, January 21, 2009 – Susan Desmond-Hellmann, president of Product Development at South San Francisco-based Genentech, Inc. has joined the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s Economic Advisory Council for a three-year term beginning January 2009.
Economic Advisory Council members provide information on current and pending developments in the regional and national economy. In her new role, Dr. Desmond-Hellmann will represent the biotechnology industry by providing her observations and opinions to the board of directors and management of the San Francisco Fed on the present state of the economy, and the developments within her area of expertise.
In her role as president of Product Development, Dr. Desmond-Hellmann is responsible for Genentech's Development, Process Research & Development, Business Development, Product Portfolio Management, Alliance Management and Pipeline Planning Support functions. She is also a member of Genentech's seven-person executive committee.
Dr. Desmond-Hellmann joined Genentech in 1995 as a clinical scientist and was named chief medical officer in 1996, then executive vice president, Development and Product Operations, in 1999. In addition to her work at Genentech, Dr. Desmond-Hellmann is an adjunct associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and completed her clinical training at UCSF.
In July 2008, Dr. Desmond-Hellmann was appointed to the California Academy of Sciences Board of Trustees. From 2005 to 2008, she served as member of the American Association for Cancer Research Board of Directors, and in 2001 she was named to the board of directors of the Biotechnology Industry Organization.
Dr. Desmond-Hellmann received her Bachelor of Science in pre-medicine and her medical degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. She also holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Stephen M. Brophy, president of Page Land & Cattle Company, Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Brophy was reappointed as chairman of the Economic Advisory Council starting in January 2009. He has served as chairman since 2007 and was also the former vice chair in 2006.
