Second Century Scholars Program:
Bank of Hawaii's Community Development Investment in Hawaii's Youth

One hundred high school students in Hawaii may herald the new millenium as the first members of their families to attend college. This promising group is participating in an innovative, $4 million educational program established last December by Bank of Hawaii.

The students chosen for the Second Century Scholars Program attend Hawaii"s public and private high schools; they must also be members of low or moderate-income families and must be the first in their immediate family to attend college. Of the 350 students nominated by local teachers and counselors, 100 were selected by a panel of representatives from Hawaii"s premiere universities to participate in the program.

Under the program, selected students must maintain a high level of academic performance throughout high school. Upon graduation and acceptance to the college of their choice, the Second Century Scholars Program will award each student $10,000 for each year of their four years of undergraduate course work.

In addition to financial assistance, the Second Century Scholars Program provides a supportive network upon which the students may rely throughout their high school and college years. The support services offered by the staff of Hawaiian high schools, Bank of Hawaii and community resource groups add a personal dimension to the program which reinforces the primary goal of graduation from both high school and college. The network includes mentors from Bank of Hawaii who are personally available to students to answer their questions, link them with community resources or simply provide moral support and encouragement.

The program includes a full complement of resources for the college-bound, including:

  • Bank of Hawaii staff and student mentoring relationships;
  • Preparation for college entrance exams;
  • College selection and application assistance;
  • Tutoring services;
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters support services for students and their families;
  • Frequent tracking of student progress during and after high school.

Students are encouraged to make use of these support services throughout their college years as well.

“We see this program as an investment in Hawaii’s future,” said Bank of Hawaii"s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Lawrence M. Johnson. “Through the Second Century Scholars Program, Bank of Hawaii is demonstrating its commitment to Hawaii"s children and youth, those who will build our community"s success in the next hundred years.” CI
