Congress created the Federal Reserve System with the intent that it has a broad perspective on economic and financial conditions in all parts of the nation. The System is composed of a central, governmental agency—the Board of Governors—in Washington, D.C., and 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks, located in major cities across the nation.
The San Francisco Fed serves the Twelfth District, which encompasses nine western states—Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai’i, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington—plus American Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The SF Fed engages with a wide range of businesses and communities throughout the District, listening to and learning from the on-the-ground experiences of our constituents. These engagements inform the SF Fed President’s contribution to the monetary policy making process and contribute to the SF Fed’s overall understanding of the state of the economy in the District.
In addition to gaining valuable perspectives on economic conditions from interactions with business, civic, and community leaders, SF Fed staff engage in public speaking appearances to share information about our work.
